MAYVILLE, N.Y.- A horse has been diagnosed with Equine Encephalitis virus in Chatauqua county this past week. Health officials in that county say the mosquitoes carrying the Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus, or EEE, are expected to die off with the cold weather. The mortaliity rate in horses diagnosed with the virus is usually around 90%. It was the first of EEE case ever recorded in the southern tier and the first documented case of the disease in New York State this year. In the last 40 years there have only been four reported cases of EEE in humans. All of those cases however, have been fatal.
