MCJL Holds Dialogue on Madrasas and Human Rights Muslim Center for Justice and Law has held a stakeholders’ dialogue on Madrasas and human rights. The dialogue was held August 15th at Hotel Africana and it was part of MCJL’s efforts that looks to provide the framework/handbook to establish and sustain a healthy, productive and progressive Madrasa. The dialogue was attended by representatives from Uganda Police, Muslim leaders, owners of Madrasa Schools, Officials from the Min of Internal Affairs lawyers and Min of Education, Uganda Muslim Education Ass. (UMEA) and Uganda Muslim Teachers Ass. ( UMTA). At the end of the day, we want to have Madrasas that adhere to the standards agreed upon by the Muslim leadership and the government. We also want government security establishments, the media and the general public to know that Madrasas are not terrorist training camps but institutions where most Muslims had their first contact with structured teaching and learning especially before the establishment of the formal education system. We want to ensure that the rights of those young Muslims studying in Madrasas are protected. In the same respect, we are also working towards a Madrasa institution that is free from individuals who abuse it. However, we cannot do this alone. That is why we are engaging key stake holders like relevant government departments, Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, leaders of Muslim based education institutions, lawyers and teachers among others Notable among the participants in the dialogue were; Haji Nsereko Mutumba - the UMSC spokesperson, Dr. Haruna Jemba – the Secretary General Uganda Quran schools Ass, Iddi Ibin Senkumbi and Emilian Kayima from Uganda police and Agnes Igoye from the Directorate of Citizenship and Migration – Ministry of Internal Affairs.
