ME AND POLITICIANS, Ive never liked too many of them. Well actually, I had fun poking fun at them because years ago I got paid to do it thanks to Sue Reaviss hubby Herm who had faith in me and my mouth on his station WSLC-AM in Roanoke, Virginia. And Mr . George Allen was Governor of Virginia back then. As with anyone in a public elected office I would drag their name through hell and mud. Election time meant I was in pure political heaven. That was then. Today is now. And today while attending the VIP invited press conference of the opening of Metros Silver Line I was sitting right in front of Governor (retired) George Allen and his gracious wife. This is an admission of NEVER KNOWING the man until today. Mr. Allen is quite a guy. After the pomp and celebration of ribbon cutting, he got right on the subway car with all of us public folk. His lovely wife standing a few steps back to allow him to do what apparently he likes to do now that his Governor days are long over, and that was to mingle with everybody on the train. And not everyone under a certain age knew who he was, but without introducing himself he spoke and sparked conversation with all of us including me! And no, I didnt tell him I was the opinionated morning voice on a Roanoke radio station some 16 years ago. I got to see the man who really is a decent guy in person. I wouldnt say I was a fool back when I was young, but I got a chance to shake someones hand and feel more mature for it. Lesson for today, dont judge a book by its cover and certainly get to see all sides of a person before you taste your foot. Thank you dear Lord.
