MEDIA RELEASE 21 August 2013 CASE, AA Singapore and GIA hold third Motor Education Seminar: “Motoring & You” The Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE), Automobile Association of Singapore (AA Singapore) and the General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA) will be holding their third Motor Education Seminar: “Motoring & You” on 7 September 2013. This seminar will share with the participants the motoring essentials, such as the right mindset for safer driving and avoidance of accidents, tips for purchasing the right cars; understanding the relevant options for motor insurance and the correct procedures for making a claim. In 2012, CASE received the highest number of feedback (2,255 complaints) involving the motorcar industry, out of which the top complaints were about unsatisfactory services and defective motorcars. There have also been an increasing number of road-related accidents involving heavy vehicles in the past year. Hence, there is a need to educate consumers on what they should look out for when buying motorcars as well as issues such as motor insurance and driving safely on the road. Previous “Motoring & You” education seminars in 2010 and 2011 were well received by members of the public and motorists. The motorcar industry is also the only industry which the Ministry of Trade and Industry has agreed to publicise separately by having a special CASE brochure (Lemon Law & Motor Vehicles) to guide businesses as well as consumers. Ms Amy Ang, Deputy Head of the Legal Department of CASE will talk about the Lemon Law and explain how the legislation applies to disputes involving motor vehicles. Among the other speakers, Mr Bernard Tay, Chairman of the Singapore Road Safety Council & President of AAS will be talking about the impact of heavy vehicles on road safety in Singapore. MAJ Andy Choo, Team Leader of the Fire Investigation Team (FIT) of the SCDF Fire Investigation Unit (FIU) will be presenting the statistics of vehicle fires in Singapore. Lastly, Mr Sam Tan, Motor Convenor, GIA, will touch on current issues concerning motor insurance and the motorist, such as accidents involving foreign vehicles on Singapore roads, consequences of non-reporting of motor accidents, senior citizens insurance as well as the proposed private vehicle hire scheme. The “Motoring & You” seminar will be held on 7 September from 10am to 1pm at the Suntec City Convention Centre Meeting Rooms 300 – 302. The admission fee is S$10.
