MEDIA RELEASE FRIDAY, MARCH 07, 2014 TREASURER POLYE APPROVES K246.3M E.H.P BUDGET Port Moresby: Treasurer Don Pomb Polye today (Friday) approved the Provincial Budget of K246.3 million for Eastern Highlands in principle. The province’s budget is K23 million more this year, compared to last year’s appropriation. Mr Polye commended Governor Julie Soso and her Provincial Executive Council members for submitting it for vetting and approval, saying Hela, Western Highlands and National Capital District were yet to present theirs. “We will ensure money be disbursed directly to all the 24 LLGs in the province,” Governor Soso told Treasurer Polye when submitting the budget in Port Moresby on Friday. She proposed that all have their own LLG assemblies for work and meetings. Commenting on the concept, Mr Polye said: “The national leaders have their National Parliament and the provincial leaders have their provincial assemblies. It will be equally important for our LLG presidents to have their LLG assemblies.” He said the government would capture their proposal in 2015 Budget, adding he requested them to do its costing for its consideration. Those who have submitted theirs already are Enga, Southern Highlands, Simbu, Jiwaka, Morobe, Sandaun, East Sepik, Madang, New Island, West New Britain, East New Britain, Manus, Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Milne Bay, Central, Gulf, Western and Oro. A total of almost K3.6 billion has been appropriated for the provinces. It caters for their recurrent and development budgets, District Services Improvement program (DSIP) and Provincial Services Improvement program (PSIP) funds. The largest slice of about K9.4 billion of 2014 Budget has been allocated to the government departments, statutory bodies (i.e. NFA, NMSA, BDA, MRA) and agencies as their recurrent and development budgets.
