MEDIA RELEASE POLICE SCOTLAND – CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS - NORTH SAFETAYSIDERS IN PERTH AND KINROSS – Monday, May 19, 2014 Pupils from 79 schools throughout Perth and Kinross will be attending the annual Safetaysiders event held at Perth Race Course in the grounds of Scone Palace Park. With more than 1900 youngsters attending the safety education event, Safetaysiders runs from today (May 19) to Friday, May 30. Those who attend will learn how to become a Safetaysider by way of a series of special scenarios, 14 in all, which are staged by officers, staff and representatives from the emergency services, public utilities and other partner agencies. Represented are Scotland Gas Networks, Dominic Rodgers Trust, Police Scotland, Scottish Ambulance Service, British Red Cross, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, RNLI, Royal Highland Educational Trust, Scottish and Southern Energy, Perth and Kinross Councils Education Department, The Environment Service and Youth Services, NHS Smoking, Network Rail, British Transport Police, A & J Stephen Builders and Stagecoach UK Bus. The scenarios are tailored to test the reactions of the children and educate them as to what to do when faced with a number of different challenges and life learning situations. This will be the 18th year that Safetaysiders has been held at Perth Race Course in the grounds of Scone Palace Park. Over the years the much-valued event has informed and enlightened thousands of children from across Perth and Kinross about how to deal with potentially dangerous situations and equip them with life skills. Sam Morshead, General Manager at Perth Race Course, said: ‘‘This event has been here at Perth Race Course since 1997 and it is tremendous that so many local children come along and learn many different safety messages and to see what the race course has to offer as a setting and unique location.’’ Sheena Devlin – Head of Education – Early Years and Primary – Education and Children’s Services - Perth and Kinross Council said: ‘‘Safetaysiders is a fantastic event for children who will learn in a realistic context and be able to assess and manage risk, as well as understand the impact of risk taking behaviour on themselves and on others. They will also learn how to protect themselves and others and reduce the potential for harm that they could face in the area where they live. Hopefully these important messages will be remembered for a very long time.’’ Safetaysiders would not be sustainable without the good will and support that exists for the project from many, individuals, companies, utilities and services involved including – Perth Race Course, Scone Palace, Perth and Kinross Community Safety Partnership, Scotland Gas Networks, Dominic Rodgers Trust, Police Scotland, Scottish Ambulance Service, British Red Cross, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, RNLI Lifeboats, Royal Highland Educational Trust, Scottish and Southern Energy, Volvo GAP Group Plant and Tool Hire, Perth and Kinross Councils Education Department, The Environment Service and Youth Services, NHS Smoking, Network Rail, British Transport Police, A & J Stephen Builders, Stagecoach UK Bus, Crimestopeers-fearless.org, Highland Spring, Tesco-Edinburgh Road, Royal Highland Educational Trust, British Telecom, G.
