MEDIA RELEASE RESEARCH TO STUDY IMPACT OF OTHER CONDITIONS ON HEART DISEASE TREATMENT The long-term management of people with acute coronary disease and heart disease who also suffer other illnesses will be the subject of a new research project. Greater Green Triangle University Department of Rural Health researcher Dr Kevin McNamara has secured a Post-Doctoral Fellowship research grant from the Heart Foundation to study the management of acute coronary syndrome for patients with ‘multi-morbidity’ (two or more co-existing health conditions’). The research will contribute to quality improvement practices for GPs and aims to develop more awareness of the best way to care for patients. Dr McNamara, from Flinders University, said the research would help GPs to be more aware of co-morbidity factors relating to heart disease. “We will look at kidney disease and cardiovascular disease and a range of co-morbidities and how we should manage those issues,” he said. The study will also look at the risk-benefit of using medications, such as anti-inflammatories taken to relieve arthritis even though heart disease risk is increased. The research will investigate how frailty and ageing influence treatment and will also highlight how the preferences and priorities of patients could be considered as part of a treatment plan. The work will expand on existing GGT UDRH research into quality improvement in general practice, and managing multiple illnesses, including the TrueBlue project which helps general practices to deal with multiple chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and depression. The GGT UDRH is a partnership between Flinders University and Deakin University.
