MEDIA STATEMENT 3RD ASEAN MINISTERIAL MEETING ON DRUG MATTERS 2-3 DECEMBER 2014, JAKARTA ______________________________________________________ Hon. Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Minister of Home Affairs is in Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia for the 3rd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters (AMMDM). The first AMMDM Meeting was held in Bangkok in 2012 and in Bandar Sri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam in 2013. The Hon. Minister of Home Affairs and other ASEAN Ministers are also scheduled for a courtesy call on the President of the Republic of Indonesia. The main objective of the Meeting is to bring together all ASEAN Member States in reaffirming the commitment of the region as well as to intensify efforts to speed up the implementation of the ASEAN work plan in combating illicit drug production and trafficking particularly in realising the vision of ASEAN Drug-Free region by 2015. In this relation, issues of vigorous law enforcement, treatment and rehabilitation, re-integration of drug abusers into the community, including promoting awareness to the public are expected to be discussed. Hon. Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, is expected to deliver a statement in sharing Malaysia’s experiences in tackling drug menace. Malaysia would emphasise on the need to strike a balance between supply reduction and demand reduction to tackle this issue. With regards to supply reduction, Hon. Minister of Home Affairs will highlight the achievements of the Special Tactics and Intelligence Narcotic Group (STING) in busting clandestine drug labs including the seizure of 637.82 kg of drug which amounted to RM44,280,800.00 and 35,330 drug pills amounted to RM1,641,660.00. The total seizure by STING until September 2014 worth around RM45.92 million. On the aspect of demand reduction, the National Anti-Drug Agency (NADA) has been proactive in offering treatment and rehabilitation services that include the establishment of the Amphetamine Type Stimulus (ATS) Rehabilitation Centre in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. While in Jakarta, Hon. Minister of Home Affairs is expected to meet with his counterparts from the newly elected Cabinet Ministers of the Republic of Indonesia including a breakfast meeting with the Minister of Manpower of Indonesia.
