MEDIA STATEMENT FROM SOUTH AFRICA POLICE SERVICE CORPORATE COMMUNICATION, MEDIA CENTRE, EASTERN CAPE ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS AFFECTED VARIOUS PROVINCES: MARCH 2014 A caution of a likelihood of just more than thirty (30) per cent rainfall over Eastern Cape, North West, Free State and Northern Cape was issued. The level of soil moisture in many places remain high and therefore it would not require much rain to cause flooding and mud slides. Low water bridges are also prone to flooding under such conditions and motorists are urged to be vigilant, especially at night when visibility is poor. The following precautions should be considered during flooding: · If possible, stay indoors and off the roads. · Avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where the water is above the ankles. · Just six inches of fast flowing water can knock a person off his/her feet and a depth of just two feet of fast flowing water is enough to float a car. · Never try to swim, walk or drive through fast flowing flood water, it is advisable to stop, turnaround and go another way. · Do not attempt to drive into water which covers the road as one would not know the depth or whether the road has washed away. · If the vehicle stalls in flooded water, it is advisable to leave the vehicle and reach higher ground. · Evacuate the home immediately if it is recommended before access is cut off by flood water.
