MEDICINAL PLANTS AND AYURVEDA Tulasi: Ocimum sanctum Tulasī, which is also known as Holy Basil is an aromatic plant and is known as Vrinda in Sanskrit. The two main morpho types cultivated in India and Nepal are green-leaved (Sri or Lakshmi tulasi) and purple-leaved (Krishna tulasi). Tulasi is cultivated for religious and medicinal purposes, and for its essential oil. It is widely known across South Asia as a medicinal plant and is commonly used in herbal tea, in Ayurveda. A tea prepared with leaves (4-5 leaves per cup) of Tulasi is commonly used in cough, cold, mild indigestion and diminished apetite. It is commonly used with Black Pepper in Bronchial asthma. An Oil extracted from Tulasi seeds is used in the form of ear drops to overcome ear ache and ear infections.Fungal and bacterial infections of skin are also treated with Fresh Tulasi Leaf Juice. CIMAP, Lucknow has studied the plant in details and recent research studies have found Krishna Tulasi ( one with Purple Stem) to be more effective due to its higher ocimin contents.
