MEET GIDEON!! Gideon had no reason to be giddy. This one to two-year-old Pit Bull-Bulldog mix arrived at the Mercer County Animal Shelter in West Virginia on April 12th. Little is known of Gideons history, but based on his behavior Gideon was most likely abused by someone for most of his life, or so severely abused for part of his life, that he just shut down. Either way, Gideon was at rock bottom. He fears people, noises, fast movements, crates, leashes, and pretty much everything. He also had severe skin issues. By the end of May, it was the end of the line for Gideon, and he was listed as Code Red. On June 1st, Sherry Hutchison, RADARs liaison with Mercer County, contacted us about Gideon. We provided an assistance offer the same day as an incentive for a rescue to pull him. The next day, Tina Underwood, with SAFE (Saving Animals From Euthanasia) in West Virginia pulled Gideon from the shelter! Tina told us the about her decision to take Gideon: Its like he has been waiting to leave his current state of mind, but no one has been able to get him there. That is why I had to pull him. I believe he wants to be different. He wants to trust, not to fear, and he wants to be balanced, happy and loved. He just doesnt know how to get there. Gideon had his initial vetting on June 10th. He had to be sedated to have a skin scrapping done, which indicated ringworm. He had to get frequent baths with medicated shampoo, and had to be sedated for each bath. Tina, who has been fostering Gideon, had this update for us after his follow-up treatment on July 21st: Gideon is getting better! He is now playing with toys, tennis balls, Kong balls and tug-of-war toys. He has also been able to lay down on the deck around me and a friend, and relax! We still keep a lead line on Gideon though, just so we can get him without spooking him.
