MEET MASTER ARTleader JONATHAN BENITEZ Jonathan is a Palawan-based painter who recently got into creating digital art. He was mentored by an uncle in the basics of painting, but the rest of his skills were acquired through self-education. He initially studied Engineering in college but did not continue his course. Later, he took online art class, but upon realizing that the lessons are slow paced and very elementary, he decided to do self study. Jonathan have a strong background in painting figurative subjects and non-representational abstractions. Though he is aware that these two disciplines might dwell on opposite planes, he still combines them in an attempt to blur their opposing boundaries. As an artist based in a regional area, he learned to utilize found objects and everyday materials in his creations. Aside from being a solution to the unavailability of art supplies, he finds that it also diversifies the content of his creations. He has a strong fascination with figures and how they are affected by a given environment. To date, his guiding principle is to answer the question: how can he express the spirit of this age? Living as an artist in a developing country has offered him a rich source of stories. He explores experiences which affect an individual. Of course, these are inextricable from social issues such as commoditization, economic turmoil, poverty, corruption, globalization, natural calamities, environmental issues; all of which engage us on collision course with our fate. To pursue this goal, JonathanI founded and heads the Collective Artists for the Environment or CAFE, the only art group here in Palawan. — with Dante Nico Garcia and 4 others.
