MEHRAULI ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK Mehrauli, located in the South West district of Delhi in India, is close to Gurgaon and adjoining Vasant Kunj. Established by King Mihir Bhoja of the Gurjara-Pratihara Dynasty, it was considered ‘Home of Mihir’ and hence went by the name ‘Mihirawali. It is one of the seven ancient cities which combine together to constitute the present state of Delhi. For us all, visit to Mehrauli has always been equivalent to visiting Qutub Minar, the mughal monument which imparts International acclaim to Mehrauli. Through ages, the fame of the Qutub Minar overshadowed the existenc of a Heritage Park, spread over 200 acres and surrounded by many historical monuments dating back almost a millennium. Unveiling the thick forests, which had provided cover to this park for over a century, reveals the ruin which is gaining recognition as the Mehrauli Archaeological Park. This park preserves some of the most important historical remnants of the second city of Delhi.Housing the ruins of dozens of tombs and palace buildings, several colonial follies and also Baolis [stepwells],the park is an extended part of the same complex that Mehrauli is world renowned for: Dating anywhere from the 8th to the 19th century, these ruins cover practically the whole history of Islamic Delhi. Despite its prevailing obscurity, the park is one of the most intriguing and absorbing places in the national capital. Not easy to spot, both the entrances to the Archaeological Park manages to deter many from discovering it. It easily provides the isolation and solitude that a history aspirant may covet to permit the aura of these ruins to seep in. It is one of the very few places in Delhi that abound in things to see and is still uncluttered with human presence. The present plight of the ruins around Hauz Khas, which came to limelight just about ten years back, does indicate the future of the ruins in Mehrauli Archaeological Park.We – Delhiites should make most of it before the area is teeming with in-house tourists as well as the high end tourists from beyond our borders. Make time to visit and that time has to be now.
