Councillor Arron Wood said Melbourne had to become more sustainable for it to remain the world’s most liveable city. “In particular, delivering new open space as the nation’s fastest growing municipality is hugely challenging, but so important for liveability,” he said. Cr Doyle said population growth was inevitable, but the key was to ensure it was “smart growth, not dumb growth”. Councillor Jackie Watts warned: “Unless the urban environment is conducive to living a decent life (density, air, safety culture, transport etc) then we will cease to be a ‘go-to’ city.” SPP: Does this sounds like a bunch of pollies dithering and denying?
