MEMORABLE BAY AREA MOMENT: met with AF3IRM Berkeley student leaders Melissa Padilla & Valeska S. Castaneda Gutierrez last night. Valeska has just come back from doing work against deportations, against the inhumane treatment of immigrants in Arizona. She told powerful stories of women migrants buying birth control because they KNEW theyd be raped crossing the border, of the deaths of women & children in the desert, of bandaging a survivors wounds. She was so passionate, so shocked, her eyes were glazed...and all of a sudden I was looking into a mirror at myself after returning from the Philippines. I knew she (and I) wouldnt completely heal, but this trauma is what wed use to fuel our fire. All of a sudden we have new work to do across another border.... THIS is what transnational feminism looks like. #AF3IRM #relentless
