The Mental Health Aide works in a designated unit as a staff member of the Student Services team, responsible for implementing special management programs and actively supporting the sites social learning curriculum. On a daily basis working with mentally ill or developmentally disabled juvenile females who are chronically ill and violent. Must have the confidence to know how to o de-escalate, provide crisis intervention, develop short-term and long -term interventions with a therapist, evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, and be able to communicate clearly client progress or lack there of (oral and written). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: •Adheres to the facility and daily schedule, assists with ensuring that the students are on time for all elements and scheduled activities and that they complete their daily assignments. •Demonstrates awareness of the overall status of the program and students. •Provides consistent interactive supervision of student athletes to ensure the safety, health and welfare of staff and students at all times. Counts completed before and after all movements and at the beginning and end of each shift. Supervises daily living routines that occur on shift, including wake-up, hygiene, meals, chores, physical elements, bedtime, etc. Plans, organizes and supervises students participation in athletic/recreational activities, games, leisure activities and community service. Directly supervises students using controlled substances or cleaning agents. Supervises all phone calls made by students and personally dials the phone numbers. •Conducts timely checks of students in administrative seclusion, Time Out or Administrative Separation every 15 minutes and those on Suicide Precaution Monitoring Status as required. This could range from constant observation to anywhere from 4-10 minute checks; depending on the assessment on the risk assessment form. •Provides individual counseling on an as needed basis to the students, to assist them with completing established goals and to develop social skills. •Reviews all pertinent logs at the start of each shift. •Documents the use of tools, equipment and sharps in the proper logs. •Distributes student medication on assigned shift. Documents all medication that is administered, refused and/or destroyed before the end of the shift. •Monitors scheduled educational, entertainment and religious events for specified students. •Provides crisis intervention when needed. •Participates in Disciplinary Hearings when appropriate. •Directs/escorts students to process them out within the guidelines established by their Special Management Program or site policy. •Ensures that all exterior doors, staff office doors, supply closet doors, bathroom doors and individual room doors are closed and locked at all times. QUALIFICATIONS: •60 credit hours in the Human Services field; bachelors degree preferred. •At least one year of prior experience in an in-patient or residential facility. •Experience with chronically mentally ill and/or violent clients. •Certified in Medication Administration. •Able to work in excess of 40 hours per week with the possibility of a varied schedule.
