MERGING TAMIL CALENDAR WITH ENGLISH Kudos to the Tamil Nadu - TopicsExpress

MERGING TAMIL CALENDAR WITH ENGLISH Kudos to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the government for successfully shifting the Tamil new year from April to January, From Tamil month Chithirai to Thai. The next revolutionary thing to do is to merge the Tamil calendar with the English calendar. As of now only fifteen days separate the English and Tamil new year. In these days of global warming, unseasonal rains, unseasonal floods, failure of the monsoons, water starved delta areas no harm will be done if you advance your calendar by fifteen days. Normally we relate the weather with the month, but with nine months of hot and humid weather throughout the year, and shortage of annual rainfall year after year, there is little relevance to relate the weather with the particular month. Thus let January first of the year be also the Thai first of the Tamil calendar. Next logical amendment to the Tamil calendar will be to synchronize the days of the Tamil months with English months. Thus the month of Thai will have 31 days and the month Masi will have 28 or 29 days depending upon the leap year or not, and the Tamil month Panguni will have 31 days and end with Markali having 31 days. To start with these adjustments will look like a major tinkering of the ancient Tamil calendar. But in reality we are only making minor adjustments to the Tamil calendar, so that it is much easier to preserve and enabling much wider use of the Tamil calendar by the future generations. Most of the younger generations do not know either the day or the month of the Tamil calendar. It is not their fault; it is rarely used in their day to day environment. Tamil calendar as of now is redundant and it is used only in certain government correspondence. If we do not find ways to improve and improvise, our ancient Tamil calendar will become the research work for the future scholars and historians. And will be totally lost to the future generations, who are growing up with absolutely no need to use the Tamil calendar. Cultural tsunamis will wipe out our calendar from our midst. The advantages of merging the Tamil calendar with English are immense. We will celebrate the New Year along with the rest of the world. This will prevent the funny situation of the Tamil race going to the Hindu temple to pray for the year on an English New Year day. Modern day youth will be quite accustomed to the name of the month in Tamil calendar. In the calendar lay out, we can leave out the name of the English months or print it in small letters, making the name of the Tamil month in bold letters. In the layout of the daily calendar also there is no need for dual dates in the sheets. Let the government set up a committee of experts to evaluate the above proposal and implement it if found feasible.
