MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR ABOUT SECRET CITY FESTIVAL - TopicsExpress

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR ABOUT SECRET CITY FESTIVAL TONIGHT: #SecretCity is a free festival of art and performance taking place outdoors and indoors on June 22nd. The festival connects #Minneapolis residents to forgotten city landscapes and imagines the future of our urban built environment through art activities and events. Secret City is also the public celebration of two exciting new art projects in downtown Minneapolis: #MIMMI (the Minneapolis Interactive Macro Mood Installation), a new art work installed in the Convention Center Plaza and #MadeHere, a pop-up storefront campaign in the new Hennepin Cultural District celebrating local creative culture. The festival happens in four hubs: the Convention Center Plaza, Hennepin Avenue, The Basilica of Saint Mary – Minneapolis Sculpture Garden area and Midtown Greenway. Connecting these hubs will be a pedestrian wayfinding project that makes walking a process of discovery. For one night the festival will infuse our city with creative energy that engages our imaginations about the future. The Basilica underpass will be lit up with art and performance presented by the Soap Factory and the #BodyCartographyProject, visually connecting the Walker to downtown. Minneapolis Art on Wheels artists will project your ideas for future spaces onto buildings along Hennepin Avenue, and Block E will come to life with interactive art and theater from Made Here and the Minnesota Fringe Festival. The centerpiece of the festival is #MIMMI, a large, inflatable, cloud-like sculpture that reflects the city’s emotions through social media. MIMMI is an emotional gateway to Minneapolis, bringing residents and visitors together to experience – and participate in – the collective mood of the city. Engaging both the virtual and physical layers of the community, MIMMI uses technology to see the city in a new way and reinforce public gathering that has characterized urban life for millennia. Come together and experience bike ballet dancers, play ping pong, or sing with the choir. Together we can change MIMMI’s mood. For the night of June 22nd, Secret City invites residents and visitors to bike, walk, connect and activate the city’s spaces, help impact MIMMI’s mood and trigger the imagination. R.T. Rybak - Mayor, City of Minneapolis Government
