MESSAGE: HOW ARE THE MIGHTY FALLEN! TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 31 : 1 - 13. PREACHER: REV. DR. WILLY MUTISO. INTRODUCTION: So far, our journey with David has covered about ten years of his life. For about seven of those years, David has been on the run from King Saul. Saul had been a good, godly man in the beginning of his rule, but his rejection of God’s plan for his life and his refusal to walk with the Lord has brought about his own rejection by God (1 Sam. 16:1). From that tragic moment, Saul began a downward spiral into insanity. Saul’s insanity manifested itself in jealousy and murderous hatred toward David. David, in those ten years, grew stronger. Saul, however, grew weaker and weaker. The grace of God was over David. Today, we look at the awful tragic death of King Saul and his three sons. Let us examine these verses. There is a lesson for each one of us. David laments the death of Saul (2 Sam. 1:17-27). As he laments Saul, David three times says, “How are the mighty fallen!” Let us take these words of pity and observe three points: The tragedy of Saul’s death (31:1-6). His death was a sad death. His death was a shameful death. It was shameful because of what happened. It was shameful because it did not have to happen (John 10:10). The testimony of Saul’s death. There is a reminder in Saul’s death (Heb. 9:27; 2 Sam. 14:14; Job 14:5; Job 30:23; Psalm 89:48; Rom. 5:12; Eccl. 12:5). There is a reality in Saul’s death: “We can either die badly or die well” x (Ezekiel 33:11; Psalm 14:13). The teaching from Saul’s death. The appearances of Saul’s death. It appeared that the end had come (v.7). It appeared that the enemy had won (v.7-10). The accomplishments of Saul’s death. It allowed the introduction of a new plan (Gen. 49:10; 1 Sam. 16: 12-13). It allowed the introduction of a new people. It allowed the introduction of a new promise. The absurdity of Saul’s death: “He played the fool.” He lived and died a fool. CONCLUSION: How are the mighty fallen!
