METEOROLOGY With an 80% chance of rain last night, there was no surprise when it arrived. It poured – hard – for about 87 seconds, then retreated to just very light on and off showers, and at that, mostly off. Out to fetch the paper this morning, I looked up saw something unprecedented, at least in my experience. I’m pretty sure it’s not as rare as Wednesday’s selenelion, but since I missed that, I went in to grab the camera; I wanted to either a) share it with you; b) prove to myself that I wasn’t again delirious. Did I mention the rain? The clouds were still present but very thin, and here and there were holes in the deck where even stars shone through. The moon was straight up…Moon Noon, I think it’s called. Did I mention the clouds were thin? It wasn’t foggy, but they were very low clouds. But what made the experience surreal: there was no wind at ground level, but look at them racejust a few hundred feet up!!! Did I mention what meteorologists call this effect? They call it, “Beats the crap out of me.”
