MH370 Unsung heroes Today. While the most of us enjoy a relaxed day with our families and friends, I think we all should spare a thought for the large number of people who are working relentlessly to bring a closure to the MH370 saga. 1. The SAR team from so many different countries are really risking their lives searching for the plane in the treacherous southern Indian Ocean. The pilots and the crew of the aircraft and ships now traversing the southern Indian Ocean are heroes. It is a crazy place to be in. If any of the search planes have engine problems while searching, they will be in real trouble for the nearest landing point is 4 hours away. These are heroes. 2. The satellite, radar, weather and oceanographic people who have to forage through zillion bits of data from multiple satellites and sensors to pinpoint the search area. If you are familiar with remote sensing, you will know that this is not an easy task. Many of these specialists have been working continuously over the past 3 weeks trying to solve the puzzle. They are heroes. 3. The caregivers appointed by MAS to take care of the families of the passengers and crew. I personally know some of the caregivers who undoubtedly have an extremely challenging task of comforting and caring for the grieving family members. They have been abused, yelled at, cursed and even threatened with physical harm yet they continue doing their jobs admirably. They are heroes. 4. The current MAS cabin crew (and ground crew) who serve all the routes who have to answer continuous array of questions from passengers - often abusive questions asking why MH370 went missing. If the task of caring for a plane load of passengers is not hard enough, they have to put up with annoying busybodies and naysayers. They are heroes. 5. The comms people at the PMs office and the Ministry of Transport who have to prepare for and manage the daily media briefings and prepare tonnes of press statements daily. It is not an easy tasks. The media releases have to be written carefully in order to be precise while meeting the demand for information. They have their hands fulls explaining and clarifying rumours, speculations, ghost stories, conspiracy theories and a few pretty dumb reporters. Many of them have been verbally abused countless of times. Most of them have been working non stop for the past 3 weeks. They are heroes. 6. The investigation team that has the gargantum task of poring over tonnes of information for clues leading to the incident. This is probably the biggest and most mysterious investigation in the history of world aviation. It is NOT easy. This sort of investigation can overwhelm even the largest nations with the most sophisticated technology. The investigation teams play an important role to making future air travel safer. They are heroes. 7. Hishammuddin and his team who have been on their feet since 3 weeks ago. I am not sure how much weight he has lost or how much his hair has greyed, but it is pretty obvious to me that his burden is an immense one. Repeat : the burden that he is carrying now is very very big. At the moment, I cannot imagine anyone else in this country who could have done a better job. He and his team are heroes. 8. And there are many more to have been working hard. Many ordinary Malaysians have prayed for MH370. Many have consoled the families and friends of the passengers and crew. Many have come together regardless of race, religion and creed praying and hoping for the best. Many are supporting the people who are working on the SAR and other efforts. Many are simply being supportive of the country at this difficult time. You guys are heroes too. Spare a thought for the unsung heroes. Have a good Sunday, people.
