MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PARKS AND MIAMI-DADE COUNTY DISTRICT 4 COMMISSIONER SALLY A. HEYMAN TO BREAK GROUND FOR NEW ADA ENHANCEMENTS AT HAULOVER BEACH PARK (MIAMI, March 21, 2014) — The Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department and Miami-Dade County District 4 Commissioner Sally A. Heyman, are making way for new ADA-enhancements that will better connect people with disabilities to recreational opportunities at Haulover Beach Park, located at 10800 Collins Avenue in Miami. On Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. they will break ground for a new concrete pathway pedestrian tunnel, connecting the park’s north parking lot to the beach. “The upgrades will allow people with disabilities and all visitors to enjoy the park’s improved amenities and natural beauty,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “I am very pleased to see this improvement project underway. The new tunnel will help people with disabilities and challenges to gain easier access to the sand and surf,” said Commissioner Heyman. The ADA accessibility upgrade will include removing the existing steps at the east end of the pedestrian tunnel, excavating the ground to the level of the tunnel and gradually sloping the ground to meet the boardwalk. A new ADA-compliant concrete walkway will connect the tunnel to meet the boardwalk. New concrete retaining walls on the sides of the tunnel will mimic the Art Deco design of the park’s Marina Dockmaster Building. In addition, there will be ADA parking located at the west end of the tunnel. “These ADA improvements are vital to the Haulover Park general plan and park users. This iconic beachfront park is being modernized to better serve patrons with disabilities,” said Miami-Dade County Parks Director Jack Kardys. Miami-Dade County Parks Design and Build Team is working in conjunction with Vee Architecture Corp., and construction contractor ACT Services to complete this project. The total project cost is $652,000. Funding will be provided by the “Building Better Communities” General Obligation Bond Program. The 258-acre Haulover Beach Park is touted as one of South Florida’s most beautiful beaches. A mile-and-a-half stretch of pristine white sand shores, dunes and open ocean surf, make it the ideal spot for sun-bathing, swimming or surfing. The entire beach is guarded by trained lifeguards, who will inform beach patrons of existing weather and surf conditions. Park visitors can enjoy an array of amenities, including shaded picnic facilities, seaside concessions, a dog park, a kite shop, and a full-service marina. During the tunnel construction, traffic for the north beach parking lot will be re-directed to parking lot #1 (west of Collins Avenue, just south of the Boat Ramp). Slow traffic is expected during peak times. For those requiring assistance, Miami-Dade County Parks provides a free shuttle service on weekends and holidays, easing visitors to the north end of the beach. The shuttle is located east of the beach tunnels in parking lot #1, near the lifeguard headquarters building. The Haulover Marine Center/Boat Ramp entrance will remain open for Marina patrons.
