MICHAEL & ZERIDA Michael first met Zerida in 2005 in his form six vacation. She was only thirteen. She was invited by his cousin sister home, for a get-together. They became friends, he took her number, and kept in touch. A few weeks later, he took her on an ice cream date, to a now defunct ice cream parlour, called Chippers, it used to be on the Watoto church building. When he joined Makerere University she visited him a couple of times. They however never dated as boyfriend and girlfriend, just good friends. They slowly lost touch and didn’t communicate for the next seven years. He finished university and started working, she cleared secondary school and went to Cape Town to pursue her undergraduate degree. In June 2012, a mutual friend on Facebook, tagged both of them in a picture. As soon as he saw her name, he sent her a friend request. She accepted immediately. He left her a couple of messages that she didn’t respond to. At the time he was working in Seychelles. He moved back, and then went to the UK to pursue his master’s degree. Sometime in October 2012, she sent him a message on Facebook:...... They were chatting mostly about random topics. The chat went on, and kept getting more in-depth and personal with time. Before long, they were spending more and more time on Facebook. Late night calls came into the picture too. Facebook became too slow, so they added whatsapp into the mix. Michael was coming out of a bad relationship, so her company felt God-sent. Meanwhile, she wasn’t seeing anyone at the time. On 25th, December, 2012, he asked her to be his girlfriend she said yes. They didn’t know how to make it work from miles apart. One thing they were sure of though, was that they loved each other and were willing to give anything to make it work. Whatsapp became a way of life for them. They also started skyping. Calls weren’t as cheap, for a student’s budget. And neither was data for internet access. But our determination surmounted any challenges. We were determined to forego meals at times, as long as we can call and skype with each other daily. They worked out a routine: Wednesday and Saturday evenings were movie nights on skype. She rented her movies from a library, while he subscribed to Netflix, and they would share a screen on skype. From December 2013 they are both back home; he runs a marketing firm and she runs a pre-school. They say dating physically is different from long distance dating. Arguments and disagreements are easier to resolve in a normal physical relationship
