MILD START WITH A BRIEF COLD CHANGE Situation: A series of fronts are pushing into the West Coast bringing heavy rain, meanwhile on the east we bask in mainly settled conditions under a NW flow. However we have brief respite in the form of a short and sharp SW change which will drop the temperatures and produce some showers today. Over the next few days we look set to be buffeted by strong to gale force NW winds and warm temperatures (Friday-Saturday) By Sunday we could well see a much colder SW flow develop over the south island producing showers and snow to low levels (500-600m). Currently there is still a chance it may miss us all together due to its westerly nature. Mid Canterbury: Mostly settled start with harmless high cloud. Winds will be gusty NW but will be replaced but much cooler SW winds and with this some brief afternoon showers. High of 17 degrees before the cold change Outlook: A real mixture over the next 5 days. Thursday is looking mainly settled with sunny skies and mild temperatures. As we head into Friday we will see heavy rain falling in the headwaters and strong to gale NW winds across the plains and Christchurch pushing the temperatures into the high teens. Saturday looks fairly similar but winds will turn more westerly. Sunday there is a potential still for a cold change which COULD bring showers and snow to fairly low levels (500-600m).
