MILTON — The owner of six animals found dead in an abandoned home in Gulf Breeze last year is scheduled to stand trial in February. Toni Phelps, 41, will appear in court Feb. 19 for felony charges of causing a cruel death to animals and misdemeanor charges of abandonment of an animal and causing a health/safety nuisance. Santa Rosa County sheriff’s deputies were called to Phelps’ home on Winding Shore Drive on Nov. 6, 2012. The house was locked, but they could see two of the dead animals through a window. Inside, they the remains of three dogs and three cats, bags of food ripped to shreds, furniture partially eaten and floors caked with animal feces. Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Haines said at the time that the animals appeared to have been abandoned for “months and months.” A neighbor told deputies she had not seen the Phelps for at least two months. Phelps apparently moved to Pensacola, where she was arrested Nov. 9, 2012. Phelps is charged with six counts of causing cruel death and animal abandonment for each animal. Santa Rosa County Circuit Judge John F. Simon will preside at the trial.
