MINDANAO: THE LAND OF PROMISE Mindanao is the second largest island in the Philippines, positioned at the South of the nation. The region comprises a collective of islands in the Sulu Archipelago, home to almost 22 million people, and one of the three island groups in the Philippines along with Luzon and Visayas. The island of Mindanao is larger than a 125 countries worldwideand is the eighth most populated island in the world. Davao City, ranked fourth safest city worldwide by Numbeo in 2012 is the largest city, and the island area also comprises of six administrative regions and twenty six provinces. Mindanao’s varied history and remarkable geographical landscape make it a unique destination. The Island region has laid witness to thirteenth century Arab traders, seventeenth century Spanish settlers and most recently, twentieth century resettlement programs, making it one of the most culturally diverse islands in the Philippines. Different languages, tribes and ethnicities are prevalent throughout Mindanao, which has evolved into a melting pot of different cultures. This diversity is not without challenges as the religious differences and poverty has led to insurgency. The government is striving to achieve peace, and in early 2014, a comprehensive peace agreement on Bangsamoro was signed, and with it a step toward harmony. Of all the islands in the Philippines, Mindanao shows theone of the greatest variety of physiographic development and is subsequently considered the Food Basket of thePhilippines. It has untapped natural resources and opportunities, and with its vast natural and human resource base, is becoming an opportunistic gateway in tourism, aquaculture and agribusiness. youtube/watch?v=jpp0lNP02Js#t=31
