MINISTRY OF EDUCATION NEWS RELEASE 6th June, 2014 Launch of the CARICOM – Spain Citizen Security Project – ‘Reducing Youth on Youth Violence in Schools and Communities in CARICOM Member States’. The Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, and support from the Government of Spain, is pleased to advise of the launch of the CARICOM – Spain Project ‘Reducing Youth on Youth Violence in Schools and Communities’ on Monday, 9 June 2014 at the Hilton Hotel Trinidad. The goal of this project is to contribute to a reduction in the incidence of ‘youth on youth’ violence in selected schools and communities in five (5) CARICOM Member States viz. Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the five major elements of the Project: (i) Assessment of environmental threats, risk, resilience and protective factors for school and community-based violence in an identified school and community in each participating Member State; (ii)Development and implementation of targeted programmes and interventions based on the findings of the Assessment; (iii) The establishment of Champions for Change Clubs (in school and in Community) to support and reinforce positive character development and social skills in at risk youths; (iv) Entrepreneurial training – Creativity for Employment and Business Opportunit (CEBO); an (v) After school sports and other programmes. The planned activities target in and out of school youths and will be carried out in collaboration with students, out of school youths, teachers, parents, community and faith-based leaders and organizations, government ministries and the private sector.
