MINISTRY SEEKS TO AMEND EDUCATION POLICY The education minister will in the July session of Parliament table a proposal to amend the education policy. The amendment would advocate for tertiary students to be allowed to get part-time employment while studying. Minister Pelonomi Venson–Moitoi was responding to concerns during a kgotla meeting addressed by President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama at Malatswai on Thursday. She said government was currently faced with financial constraints and as such could not afford to increase student allowances. Dr Venson–Moitoi said her ministry was aware that some students were faced with financial constraints as their parents could not afford to augment the monthly allowance of P1 400 . She said students faced with such challenge could be assisted accordingly after a thorough assessment had been carried out. She further stated that on one hand, some advocated for the monthly allowance to be increased even though they were able to cope because of parental support. Malatswai resident, Mr Kenosi Moleko, a fourth year Tourism Management student at Limkokwing university, had indicated that they were faced with financial constraints as the monthly allowance was not enough to cover for daily expenses, accommodation and transport fares during vacations. Mr Moleko had also indicated that even though he appreciated government’s move to introduce back to school programme, students who failed to proceed to senior secondary schools were not well catered for. Minister Venson–Moitoi said students who failed JC were catered for under BOCODOL to improve their grades. She added that brigades and technical colleges would also accommodate those willing to pursue vocational training. As for primary education, she said students who did not do well in their PSLE would be given a chance to repeat. She added that a thorough assessment would be done at standard four and those who did not surpass the set standards would repeat. Minister Venson–Moitoi appealed to the community to assist in addressing the shortage of accommodation for teachers by constructing houses for rental. She also said an agreement was made with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Developemnt to allow village development committees to construct LA2 houses through Ipelegeng. BOPA
