MIRABAL SISTERS CULTURAL AND COMMUNITY CENTER PRESS RELEASE HOLDS ITS 7TH ANNUAL TENANTS’ CONVENTION, November 23rd, 2013 from 9am to 5 pm The Mirabal Sisters Cultural and Community Center is hosting the 7th Annual Tenants’ Convention of Washington Heights/Harlem/Upper Westside . This event, taking place on Saturday, November 23rd, from 9am to 5 pm, is the highlight event of the year for the Washington Heights , Harlem and Upper Westside communities. Residents are facing a situation that threatens the very heart of their community. Long-time residents are being evicted or harassed and victimized by shady tactics while intolerable housing conditions persist. Schools are privatizing, more people have been deported, discriminated, the police do not respond to the community calls and besides there is not jobs for graduated students and househead workers. Gentrification, Displacement and Discrimination are an attack on working-class New Yorkers who live in rent-stabilized buildings owned by private corporations. These companies, many of them predatory investors, move out tenants by raising rents illegally, engaging in harassment and refusing to do repairs. Their aim is to destroy the regulated rent system. Tenants oftentimes wait months and in most cases years for repairs. Many in our community are discriminated against on the basis of nationality and race and economic status. Too many live in terrible conditions, subject to the neglect of property owners not meeting their obligations. These changes are affecting small businesses, for working people, Latinos and African-Americans are their clients. For 12 years, The Mirabal Sisters Cultural and Community Center has been working diligently in the community with Housing, Youth, Cultural and Educational issues. The purpose of the Convention is to unite Tenants throughout Harlem and Washington-Heights to learn about their rights and in a common struggle to preserve community to bring justice for all. Guest speakers include experts in human rights around Housing Laws/Tenants Rights, Legal Advocacy, Community Organizing, Education Justice, Obama Health Plan, New Immigrants Law, and Environmental Rights. Tenants from all boroughs are encouraged to attend. Please join us for a full day of workshops for tenants and allies about people rights. It’s crucial that we understand that hundreds of thousands of tenants are struggling to preserve our community. Come be part of taking back your community. It all begins with YOU! The event will be hold this Saturday, November 23rd , from 9am to 5 pm at 468 W 143rd St. between Amsterdam and Convent Avenues. Supported by: Tenants Associations, PA’s at ten different schools, Housing Court Answer, Urban Justice Center , EmblemHealth , New York Foundation, Catholic Charity for Human Development, North Star Fund, Union Square Awards The Mirabal Sisters Cultural and Community Center, Inc. is a non-profit organization committed to empowering the communities of Hamilton Heights , Manhattanville, Morningside Heights and Washington Heights by promoting collective action to demand social justice and better opportunities for immigrants and low income residents and people of color.
