MIXED optimism and Relieve for Thousands of refugees living in Dadaab Refugee complex ,As Un secretary General Ban Ki Moon and world Bank president visited DADAAB REFUGGE CAMPS: Un secretary general Ban ki moon and world Bank president, HE JIM YONG KIM,The president of African islamic Bank together with the Kenyan cabinent secretary for Foreighn affair, Ambassodor Amina Mohamed,internal security cabinent secretary,joseph olenku and County Leaders led by Garissa county Governor,HE Nathif Jama accompanied by Area MP,Hon. Mohamed Dahiye and other High profile international Dignitaries on Wednesday visited Dadaab Refugee complex to deliberate various issues relating refugees living in Kenya. The Un secretary general in his second time after he visited dadaab in 2012, reaffirmed his commitment and gratitude he have for Kenya, after the country hosted thousands of refugees from war torn Somalia for close to a quarter century with much humility as they provided humanitarian reception. He said that despite all the challenges that the Kenyan Government and its people is facing by hosting one of the largest refugee populations in the world,its thought provoking that the number of refugees in Dadaab was much higher than the number of asylum seekers in Europe in 2009. “we understand that Kenyan Government and its people faced numerous challenges in terms of insecurity and other risk ,and the presence of this huge population in this fragile environment has caused negative impact,but we are glad their endurance and support is something that will not go un appreciated” Ban-ki moon said. Kenya has experienced several terrorism attacks recently of which some such attacks happened within the refugee camps. The regional and global impact of the Somalia crisis is probably at its most visible in Dadaab with high rising insecurity incidents experienced in all the camps, environmental degradation,Displacement of indigenous people,livestock and wild life. The county Governor of Garissa,HE Nathif Jama Adam appealed to the united nation secretary General and the world Bank Group president and all other Humanitarian Development Actors to leave a legacy of sustainable development for the host community post refugee repatriation a statement echoed also by Area Mp. Hon. Mohamed Dahiye. The Governor said That, Kenya is divided in 47 counties which Garissa is included and Garissa county bear the brunt of hosting the largest refugees in the world,facing numerous challenges of Environmental peril and insecurity. “ Our Government ,international organizations and NGOs must work together jointly to agree on broad strategies to assist The host community restore and rehabilitate the environment around Dadaab refugee camps as we focus on repatriation of refugees back to Somalia “ Jama said. Foreign affair cabinent secretary, Ambassador Amina Mohamed who welcomed the Un secretary general Ban ki moon said that, Kenyans continuous help to its neighboring Somalia will continue and strengthen support to governance and security inside Somalia in order to bring sanity and suitable environment . “We appeal to united nation and AU to continue seeking lasting solutions to rebuild Somalia and we pledge to cooperate whatever it takes to bring back our brothers and sisters back to there homeland savely as they unite and build Somalia.” Amina said. Meanwhile, The Dadaab member of parliament, Hon. Mohamed Dahiye appealed to the Government to consider reopening the border between Kenya and Somali as the current closure is serving no purpose but contributing to insecurity ,illegal entry of contraband goods and other indigenous people who depend on trade across the border on both sides.
