MLK Day: An AMAZING way to use your VOICE physically and metaphorically to stand for what you believe in. Check out this vid of Billie Holiday singing Strange Fruit in Southern Texas in 1939. Her father died at the age of 39 from being denied medical care in a white only hospital. Holiday indeed feared havoc that the song may cause, the immensely intense song being about lynchings (strange fruit, blood on the leaves and blood on the root, black bodies singing in the southern breeze, strange fruit hanging from the trees. Here is the fruit for the crows to pluck...). Holiday would sing this song in a dark room with only a light on her face and she stated that usually it was completely silent in the room after she sang it. I love how VERY courageous and powerful this lady is. Had to share. Happy MLK day, a bit late.
