MO - Gov. Jay Nixon on Thursday signed a bill allowing first-responders to administer an antidote for heroin overdoses. Current Missouri law says only paramedics with an order from their medical directors could stock and administer the antidote, known as naloxone or by the trademark name Narcan, in heroin overdose cases. The law allowing first-responders to administer the antidote takes effect Aug. 28. When administered in time, a single dose can reverse an overdose of heroin or legally prescribed opioid pain medication and prevent the life-threatening symptoms.
