MOBILE phone companies should ensure their networks are fool-proof, says Consumer Council of Fiji CEO Premila Kumar. Speaking during a council workshop in Labasa yesterday, Ms Kumar said they continued to receive complaints from consumers regarding hoax texts claiming certain prizes have been won. She said mobile phone companies should ensure their networks were not infiltrated by these gimmicks. The majority of these relate to some form of promotions that has been hoaxed which customers had wasted their money on, she said. It is only time that the mobile companies are taken to task and be held responsible for not ensuring their networks are safe and secure. These forms of gimmicks are high-risk because they normally demand personal information from customers relating to their bank accounts and more. Ms Kumar said a Vodafone Fiji consumer recently expressed concern about how their mobile numbers were accessed by these hoaxers. This is a serious matter that needs to be looked into by the mobile company. Vodafone Fijis head of corporate affairs Shailendra Prasad said they could not be accessing individual phone accounts. That will be an intrusion into the customers confidentiality, he said. The internet is a mode of access that is now available all over the globe and we cannot control the texts and other calls made to these mobile phones. As a business, we follow globally-accepted mobile phone business practices and continuously strive to improve our product and service delivery to our consumers. fijitimes/story.aspx?id=263272
