MOMBASA -MOROCCO TOURISM DEAL My attention has drawn to media reports regarding a tourism partnership between Mombasa City and Casablanca Local Authority(Morocco) that seeks to scale up the number of tourist arrivals in Mombasa that currently stands at 240,000 to 1,000,000 in 2015. The deal to boost tourism is a product of a recent UCLA Global Summit held in Rabat, Morocco-an event that was attended by Governor Ali Hassan Joho and his entourage. Mombasa County Executive in charge of Tourism is further reported to have attributed the low number of tourist arrivals to poor marketing.He also said that plans are under way to turn Mombasa into a six module tourism destination that will include education tourism,cultural tourism,corporate,conference and common leisure tourism. All this is good news but we should all remember that the devil is in the detail.First, for this ambitious dream to be actualized, there must be a robust legislative framework to anchor this vision.Second, there must be a committed and result-oriented stewardship by the top executive of the County. Now the million dollar question is;does the the current leadership have the necessary skills and technical know-how to navigate the intricacies involved in a project of this magnitude?What do you think?
