MONDAY, 11/10/14 HISTORY. Judges 6:33- “God, Can I Really Trust You?” (By Barry) WORSHIP: I LOVE this one by Chris Tomlin! It reminds me of my favorite Psalm (Psalm 18). https://youtube/watch?v=kYds0-M56O4&spfreload=1 SCRIPTURE: blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Jdg&c=6&t=NLT#s=217033 You have said you want to hear from God, right? It would be amazing if you could hear His voice, right? Well, what if you did? Let’s think again today about a famous man who did hear from the Lord. Gideon. Remember him? The Israelites had turned their backs on God, and this had caused them to be absolutely beat up and intimidated by their enemies. God had appeared to a man named Gideon (who, at the time, was hiding from those enemies!), and told him that God had big plans for Gideon. Remember what God said? It went something like this: —“You are a mighty hero!” —“I am with you!” —“Go rescue Israel from the Midianies. I am sending you!” —“Because I am with you, Gideon, you will absolutely destroy the Midianites. It will be as though you are fighting a single person, rather than thousands!” So, now things get interesting. After tearing down idols to false gods in his town (Remember last week?), Gideon is now putting his army together. He is ready to go to war. Well, he is ALMOST ready. Here is the story…. 33 Soon afterward the armies of Midian, Amalek, and the people of the east formed an alliance against Israel and crossed the Jordan, camping in the valley of Jezreel. 34 Then the Spirit of the LORD took possession of Gideon. He blew a ram’s horn as a call to arms, and the men of the clan of Abiezer came to him. 35 He also sent messengers throughout Manasseh, Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, summoning their warriors, and all of them responded. 36 Then Gideon said to God, “If you are truly going to use me to rescue Israel as you promised, 37 prove it to me in this way. I will put a wool fleece on the threshing floor tonight. If the fleece is wet with dew in the morning but the ground is dry, then I will know that you are going to help me rescue Israel as you promised.” 38 And that is just what happened. When Gideon got up early the next morning, he squeezed the fleece and wrung out a whole bowlful of water. 39 Then Gideon said to God, “Please don’t be angry with me, but let me make one more request. Let me use the fleece for one more test. This time let the fleece remain dry while the ground around it is wet with dew.” 40 So that night God did as Gideon asked. The fleece was dry in the morning, but the ground was covered with dew. THOUGHTS & QUESTIONS: —1. What is a fleece? It is simply an animal skin, probably a sheep skin. —2. In Verse 34, we are told that God “took possession” of Gideon. What do you think that means? —3. Do YOU belong to God? —4. Gideon is considered a legend, a hero. Does he seem like one to you? Did you notice that, even though God had made amazing promises to him, Gideon just HAD to have proof that God would really keep His word? What is your reaction to that? —*5. Gideon asked God to do two things involving the fleece. What were they? Why do you think God agreed to do it? —6. Did Gideon’s actions make it seem that he didn’t trust God? Why or why not? —7. Does God still honor these kinds of “fleece-prayers” today? —8. What is the application of today’s story in your life? —9. Do you truly trust God? —10. Did you know God considers YOU a hero, too? PRAYER: Adoration. Confession. Thanksgiving. Seeking.
