MONDAY, 16 SEPTEMBER 2013 10:15 Glasgow City 0-0 Ladies WRITTEN BY RANGERS FOOTBALL CLUB Glasgow City 0-0 Ladies RANGERS Ladies recorded arguably their finest result of the season at the weekend as they held champions-elect Glasgow City to a 0-0 draw in the SWPL. The result was notable for a number of reasons, most significantly because it was the first time in 69 games the reigning title holders had failed to win in a league fixture. The score also arrested a five-match losing streak for Angie Hind’s team in the top flight running since the resumption of the competition after the summer break. And it came on a day when a City win would have seen them retain the crown, thus delaying their inevitable victory on that front will hearten the Light Blues squad. In windy conditions, Gers had to adapt to counter that and did so well to secure a hard-earned point. Hind’s side stays fourth in the table as a consequence, ahead of Celtic on goal difference and two points behind third-top Spartans with four games of the 21-match schedule remaining. Coach Hind said: “The conditions were horrendous and were always going to effect the amount of football played. “But I felt we handled it as best as we could and were smart in our play. In the first half, we had to defend for most of the time playing against a strong wind. “That had us pegged into our half but we stood strong defensively, which gave us a real chance in the second half. “We went at City after the restart and created a few good chances to win it. Bar a great save from their keeper would have taken the lead. “I am really proud of our performance from start to finish. I think we showed great character, teamwork and desire and these have been fundamentals to our play all season. “I’m delighted for the team and to take a point from the team which has dominated the game for so long is pleasing. It provides a good platform for us to continue our development.” The teams exchanged chances in the first period, with Khym Ramsay saving from City’s Suzanne Mulvery before Megan Foley shot wide at the other end. After the break, Gers were more dominant and particularly in the first 20 minutes after play got underway once more. Lee Alexander saved from Light Blues forward Hayley Cunningham then held Amy Harrison’s header from a Karen Penglase free kick. In the end, a stalemate ensued and Rangers now have a break next weekend as Megan Sneddon joins the Scotland squad for World Cup qualifiers. She is in Anna Signeul’s squad for games against the Faroe Islands in Torshavn and Bosnia in Motherwell. Rangers are next back in action on September 29 when they host Spartans at Petershill Park. Kick-off is at 2pm. RANGERS: Ramsay; Barr, Penglase, Hill, Riley, Harrison, Ross, Sneddon, Foley, Swanson, Cunningham. ....shiz
