MONDAY MUSINGS BY WANGECHI KURIA AMPUTATE THE CANCER A few months ago I attended this interview for an internship position in one most renown offices in town .I was so excited when I got the invitation that all I could think of for almost a week was the interview .I prepared so hard to an extent I was wondering if I was becoming paranoid about it. I knocked at the M6 3rd floor and met my interviewer ready and the interview went on well .What I learnt later is that she had already selected me and all she wanted was for me to make a technical appearance, examine my soft skills to make the final decision. Within 20 minutes the interview was over .She closed her note book but it was not time to leave yet. “I have something to share she said, I went through your CV and AfricaTalentbank caught my attention, what is it anyway? Amid my explanation she cut short with “you know your generation………..”the story went on how we are a face book generation ,how we fall short of socialization skills ,how we have failed our parents ,how we spend 90% f out time in the internet looking at nothing ,how we have allowed slang and even Sheng to take over even in our CVs .That we even forget that personal pronouns are to be in capital the kind of grammar taught in class two . She went on for the next 40 minutes and concluded with how she had chased so many out of her office but she found my CV different and chose me for the job. I left the office feeling deflated though I got in mostly because all she said was the despicable truth .In black and white she highlighted the ‘cancers’ wiping out my generation. The point of sharing this occurrence is to talk to us both generation X and Y .I completely conquer with my interviewer that most of my generation is lost and to salvage the situation we need to: Amputate the cancer of idleness that we have ingrained in us and chose to focus on things that matter. Amputate the cancer of don’t care attitude that is slowly causing us to rot from inside, yet we know for sure that we care and we don’t know as much as we claim to know. We need to develop a teachable attitude. Amputate the cancer of shortcuts, the copy paste theorem and chose to work smart, invest our precious time in meaningful ventures. Amputate the cancer of the pack mentality and wanting to be a microcosm of everyone else except you. Amputate the cancer of statistics “we are young and dumb so we should be excused for our mistakes”. For generation X, amputate the cancer stereotyping. The truth of the matter is, not everyone comes from a family where daddy packs a fleet of cars outside. Not everyone is a trust fund baby. Not every born 90 subscribes to the thought of young and dumb .Some of these young ones have belabored to build on their character and inculcate the spirit of hard work, diligence and self-discipline in themselves. I would also like that you ask yourself what you are doing to solve the problem. Are you part of the solution or just complaining? Chose to make the world a better place .For your children generation W ( pun intended) might end up taking the same detour as my generation as we will be the people they look up to.
