MONITOR GHANA TELECOS, BUT CONTRIBUTE The imposition of fines by the National Telecommunications Authority (NCA) for the inefficiencies of the telecommunication companies (Telecos) is appropriate. It is more so when the latter tend to involve the business in all sorts of activities like raffle, predictions, votes, etc. at the expense of the essential social and business calls. This is not to say that deploying the mobile phones for innovative applications is not appreciated, it is more to urge them to focus on the necessities before the fashionables. It is noteworthy that an efficiently run telecom environment could result in reduced transportation bills, help reduce criminal activities, enhance education, among others. The National communications Authority acting on behalf of the people can however help enabling the environment for Telecos’ business by facilitating collocation of antennas to cut down the setup and expansion cost of the business. Even as this is considered for acceptance and implementation, the NCA should use the fines to erect masts at remote and unattractive areas for this collocation in the interest of Ghanaians at large. Gradually the Telecos’ services would improve with the infusion of these NCA masts.
