MONITOR YOUR EXERCISE INTENSITY Try using the Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) to monitor your exercise intensity. The RPE is a subjective scale ranging from zero to 10. Zero equals the amount of exertion required to sit quietly. Ten equals your maximum exercise intensity. If you are a beginner, strive for a three to five (moderate to strong intensity) range. To remain at a five, you will need to increase your speed or duration as your conditioning improves.
