MORE LET DOWNS – We conservatives have been living a nightmare for some time now. The typical storyline consists of a newly elected conservative filled with ideological enthusiasm who gives us a modicum of hope for the future…and then does something stupid to let us down. A second storyline is the conservative with a solid track record in a lesser office who decides to throw his hat into the ring for a presidential run…and then says something stupid to let us down. I offer one example of each…both from the state of Florida. A few months ago, I moved to Spring Hill, TN from Jacksonville, FL. We lived there in the same house for almost 28 years. For eight of those years Jeb Bush was our Governor. I voted twice for Jeb, helped him win and keep the Governorship and was proud to do so. More recently Marco Rubio came on the scene with a great story. I voted for Marco, helped him win his Senate seat by an overwhelming margin and was glad to do so. Now here we are in 2013 with both Jeb and Marco on the radar to make runs for the Presidency as the GOP nominee. Marco was doing just fine UNTIL he joined the Gang of Eight and began pushing ‘Amnesty’ for illegal aliens. Then he said it was necessary to give immigrants that path to citizenship before we secured the border. Now he’s arguing that we should legalize those illegals so that the taxes they pay can help us fund our border security. It’s the old “Cart before the Horse” thinking. Jeb has done fine for a long time. Unlike Marco, he’s no upstart. His track record has been solid. Then today at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference he made these remarks: "Immigrants create far more businesses than native-born Americans. Immigrants are more fertile, they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population. Immigrants create an engine of economic prosperity." I’m willing to give Jeb the benefit of the doubt…that by ‘immigrants’ he did NOT mean ‘illegal aliens’, but was rather making a general reference to the history of LEGAL immigration. But in the current ‘Immigration Reform’ climate, why make such a statement? I expect Jeb will spend the next two weeks on multiple news shows explaining what he meant by ‘Immigrants’. If by ‘Immigrants’ Jeb was referring to the 11 or so million ‘Illegal Aliens’ now living within our borders, it was a stupid and insulting thing to say. Most of us are native-born, are we not? Well, Jeb just informed you and me that we are less creative, less fertile, less loving, less familial and less economically prosperous than illegals we ought to make legal. What stupidity! Marco and Jeb – two men for which I have had great respect – have let me down. They seem to have bought into the Big Lie that ‘Amnesty for Illegals’ is the ONLY way for GOP to win the hearts and votes of Hispanics and therefore win back the White House. The truth is it’s a recipe for securing Democratic victories as far as the eye can see and rendering the GOP irrelevant!
