Giving away Rashtrapati Puraskar to Scouts and Guides of Jammu and Kashmir Chapter on behalf of the President of India at a function here this afternoon, the Chief Minister who is also Vice Patron of J&K Chapter of Bharat Scouts and Guides said that the present system of imparting education to the children particularly at the elementary level needs to be changed to suit the personality development of the children and inculcate moral and give importance to the aspect of imparting non-formal education among children including sports. The Chief Minister announced Rs.4 lakh for J&K Chapter of Bharat Scouts and Guides for its welfare activities. The Chief Minister gave away 22 Rashtrapati Puraskar to winners and congratulated them on his and on behalf of the President of India for their extraordinary work done as Bharat Scouts and Guides. Bhalla-Sikh Minister for Culture, Raman Bhalla has said that government is committed to provide minority status to Sikh community and every effort will be made to fulfil their aspirations. The Minister was addressing a congregation at Baramulla yesterday, convened to look into the genuine problems being faced by the Sikh community. He said that mutual brotherhood and fraternity are the basic principles of present government and communal harmony has been a binding force between various communities of the state. Social Welfare Scheme Reaffirming that government is determined to improve living standard of people of J&K, the Minister for Social Welfare, Sakina Itoo has said the present Government is working hard to raise the living standard of people, particularly BPLs, rural and backward people, adding that many schemes and programmes have been launched to meet this goal, adding that every efforts is being carried out for dignified life of people. Addressing a large public meeting yesterday at Sailkhayan village in Kashmir, the Minister said that providing financial assistance and other support to the needy and deserving populace is being given focused attention of the government, adding that many State and centrally sponsored social welfare schemes have been launched which are being implemented with zeal and enthusiasm across the State. Ms Itoo asked people to come forward and take maximum benefit of said schemes so that goal of aimed at the welfare and prosperity of people is achieved. Manohar-Meeting In order to listen and mitigate the problems of the people at their door step, Minister of State for Fisheries, and Cooperatives, Dr Manohar Lal Sharma convened public meetings at Dhandiyan and Thamnal of Tehsil Billawar, yesterday. On the occasion, the locals demanded new ration card for the left out families, upgradation of primary school Dhandiyan, Upgradation of transformer, play ground for the school, blacktopping of Gurha Kalyal to Dhandiyan, New Water Supply scheme for the area and provision for lift irrigation schemes. At Thamnal the issues highlighted by the representatives included, upgradation of middle school thamnal, dispensary/ medical facilities, water supply for the area, cutting and tailoring centre and playground for school, addressing shortage of kerosene oil and BPL ration etc. GAGAN A GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation system called GAGAN is set to begin initial operations by the December end. GAGAN will create straight and direct air routes, vastly improve precise take-offs and landings and save five per cent of airlines’ fuel bills. It will also benefit banking and financial networks, power grids, precision agriculture, as well as land, sea and air transport. AIR Correspondent adds that Defence establishments too can use positional and time information from GAGAN while using missiles or smart bombs and also in unmanned warfare. In the coming years, seven satellites will carry GAGAN signals covering a vast geographical area from Africa to Australia and will facilitate expansion of the service area far beyond Indian airspace. ISRO sources say that the task of launching all the seven satellites will be completed in 18 months. Women-Violence Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The United Nations General Assembly has designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The premise of the day is to raise awareness of the fact that women around the world are subject to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence. This year, the official Theme of the day is to, “Unite to End Violence against Women”. Several functions are being organized in Jammu and Kashmir to create awareness among masses about eradication of violence against women. Sham-Dangal Wrestler Abdul Gani of Malerkotla, Punjab defeated Jagroop of Amritsar in a tough bout to clinch Baba Kailakh Dev Dangal title 2013 at Thathar, Bantalab in Jammu yesterday. The dangal was organized by Baba Kailakh Nath Management Committee in which prominent wrestlers from adjoining states like Punjab and Haryana also participated. Minister for PHE, Sham Lal Sharma was chief guest whereas local MLA Bharat Bushan was guest of honour on the occasion. SPORTS Jammu Kashmir defeated host Andhra Pradesh by 17 run in Ranji Trophy Group C match at Anantapur yesterday. Chasing victory target of 142 runs in the second inning Andhra Pradesh was all out for mere 124 runs for Jammu Kashmir Ram Dayal Punia and Mohammad Muddasir bagged 3 wickets each. Union Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah has congratulated the team on this victory. Wrestling 6th J&K State Indian Style Wrestling Championship for men will be held at Dewan Mandir Akhara Jammu on November 28, 2013. According to a press note issued, this was decided during a meeting of Jammu Kashmir Indian Style Wrestling Association held yesterday. Teams from across the state are expected to participate in the tournament.
