MORNING PRAYER Lent Wednesday, 12 March 2014 Ember Day Preparation In the name of the Father and of the Son amd of the Holy Spirit. Amen! O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Hear our voice, O Lord, according to your faithful love, according to your judgement give us life. One or more of the following is said or sung: this or another prayer of thanksgiving Blessed are you, God of compassion and mercy, to you be praise and glory for ever. In the darkness of our sin, your light breaks forth like the dawn and your healing springs up for deliverance. As we rejoice in the gift of your saving help, sustain us with your bountiful Spirit and open our lips to sing your praise. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever. a suitable hymn, or A Song of Penitence Have mercy on me, O God, in your great goodness; • according to the abundance of your compassion blot out my offences. Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness • and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my faults • and my sin is ever before me. Against you only have I sinned • and done what is evil in your sight, So that you are justified in your sentence • and righteous in your judgement. Cast me not away from your presence • and take not your holy spirit from me. Give me again the joy of your salvation • and sustain me with your gracious spirit; Then shall I teach your ways to the wicked • and sinners shall return to you. Deliver me from my guilt, O God, the God of my salvation, • and my tongue shall sing of your righteousness. Psalm 51.1-5, 12-15 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. This opening prayer may be said The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence is kept. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen. The Word of God Psalmody The appointed psalmody is said. Psalm 6 Turn again, O Lord, and deliver my soul. O Lord, rebuke me not in your wrath; • neither chasten me in your fierce anger. Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am weak; • Lord, heal me, for my bones are racked. My soul also shakes with terror; • how long, O Lord, how long? Turn again, O Lord, and deliver my soul; • save me for your loving mercy’s sake. For in death no one remembers you; • and who can give you thanks in the grave? I am weary with my groaning; • every night I drench my pillow and flood my bed with my tears. My eyes are wasted with grief • and worn away because of all my enemies. R Depart from me, all you that do evil, • for the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping. The Lord has heard my supplication; • the Lord will receive my prayer. All my enemies shall be put to shame and confusion; • they shall suddenly turn back in their shame. Turn again, O Lord, and deliver my soul. Lord Jesus Christ, may the tears shed in your earthly life be balm for all who weep, and may the prayers of your pilgrimage give strength to all who suffer; for your mercy’s sake. Psalm 17 Deliver me, O Lord, by your hand. Hear my just cause, O Lord; consider my complaint; • listen to my prayer, which comes not from lying lips. Let my vindication come forth from your presence; • let your eyes behold what is right. Weigh my heart, examine me by night, • refine me, and you will find no impurity in me. R My mouth does not trespass for earthly rewards; • I have heeded the words of your lips. My footsteps hold fast in the ways of your commandments; • my feet have not stumbled in your paths. R I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; • incline your ear to me, and listen to my words. Show me your marvellous loving-kindness, • O Saviour of those who take refuge at your right hand from those who rise up against them. Keep me as the apple of your eye; • hide me under the shadow of your wings, From the wicked who assault me, • from my enemies who surround me to take away my life. R They have closed their heart to pity • and their mouth speaks proud things. They press me hard, they surround me on every side, • watching how they may cast me to the ground, Like a lion that is greedy for its prey, • like a young lion lurking in secret places. R Arise, Lord; confront them and cast them down; • deliver me from the wicked by your sword. Deliver me, O Lord, by your hand • from those whose portion in life is unending, Whose bellies you fill with your treasure, • who are well supplied with children and leave their wealth to their little ones. As for me, I shall see your face in righteousness; • when I awake and behold your likeness, I shall be satisfied. Deliver me, O Lord, by your hand. Generous Lord, deliver us from all envious thoughts, and when we are tempted by the desire for wealth, let us see your face; for your abundance is enough to clothe our lack; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Each psalm or group of psalms may end with Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. If there are two Scripture readings, the first may be read here, or both may be read after the canticle. Genesis 42.6-17 Now Joseph was governor over the land; it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground. When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke harshly to them. ‘Where do you come from?’ he said. They said, ‘From the land of Canaan, to buy food.’ Although Joseph had recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him. Joseph also remembered the dreams that he had dreamed about them. He said to them, ‘You are spies; you have come to see the nakedness of the land!’ They said to him, ‘No, my lord; your servants have come to buy food. We are all sons of one man; we are honest men; your servants have never been spies.’ But he said to them, ‘No, you have come to see the nakedness of the land!’ They said, ‘We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of a certain man in the land of Canaan; the youngest, however, is now with our father, and one is no more.’ But Joseph said to them, ‘It is just as I have said to you; you are spies! Here is how you shall be tested: as Pharaoh lives, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here! Let one of you go and bring your brother, while the rest of you remain in prison, in order that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you; or else, as Pharaoh lives, surely you are spies.’ And he put them all together in prison for three days. Canticle The Song of Manasseh, or another suitable canticle, for example, number 20 (page 570), number 33 (page 584) or number 41 (page 592), may be said Refrain: Full of compassion and mercy and love is God, the Most High, the Almighty. Lord almighty and God of our ancestors, • you who made heaven and earth in all their glory: All things tremble with awe at your presence, • before your great and mighty power. Immeasurable and unsearchable is your promised mercy, • for you are God, Most High. You are full of compassion, long-suffering and very merciful, • and you relent at human suffering. O God, according to your great goodness, • you have promised forgiveness for repentance to those who have sinned against you. The sins I have committed against you • are more in number than the sands of the sea. I am not worthy to look up to the height of heaven, • because of the multitude of my iniquities. And now I bend the knee of my heart before you, • imploring your kindness upon me. I have sinned, O God, I have sinned, • and I acknowledge my transgressions. Unworthy as I am, you will save me, • according to your great mercy. For all the host of heaven sings your praise, • and your glory is for ever and ever. Manasseh 1a, 2, 4, 6, 7a, b, 9a, c, 11, 12, 14b, 15b Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. Full of compassion and mercy and love is God, the Most High, the Almighty. Scripture Reading One or more readings appointed for the day are read. The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence. Galatians 4.21-5.1 Tell me, you who desire to be subject to the law, will you not listen to the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and the other by a free woman. One, the child of the slave, was born according to the flesh; the other, the child of the free woman, was born through the promise. Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One woman, in fact, is Hagar, from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the other woman corresponds to the Jerusalem above; she is free, and she is our mother. For it is written, ‘Rejoice, you childless one, you who bear no children, burst into song and shout, you who endure no birth pangs; for the children of the desolate woman are more numerous than the children of the one who is married.’ Now you, my friends, are children of the promise, like Isaac. But just as at that time the child who was born according to the flesh persecuted the child who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now also. But what does the scripture say? ‘Drive out the slave and her child; for the child of the slave will not share the inheritance with the child of the free woman.’ So then, friends, we are children, not of the slave but of the free woman. For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. A suitable song or chant, or a responsory in this or another form, may follow To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; O my God, in you I trust. You are the God of my salvation, To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. In you I hope all the day long. O my God, in you I trust. Remember, Lord, your compassion and love, for they are from everlasting. To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; O my God, in you I trust. from Psalm 25 Gospel Canticle The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah) is normally said, or Saviour of the World (page 644) may be said Refrain: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, • who has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, • born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets God promised of old • to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us, To show mercy to our ancestors, • and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: • to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, • holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, • for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation • by the forgiveness of all their sins. In the tender compassion of our God • the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, • and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1.68-79 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. Refrain: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Prayers Intercessions are offered ¶ for the day and its tasks ¶ for the world and its needs ¶ for the Church and her life The cycle on pages 364–365 and the prayer on page 377 may be used. These responses may be used Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer (or) Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us. Silence may be kept. The Collect of the day is said Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer is said Trusting in the compassion of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. (or) Trusting in the compassion of God, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.
