MORNING PRAYER Thursday, 11 September 2014 Preparation O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. One or more of the following is said or sung: a prayer of thanksgiving (page 109), a suitable hymn, or A Song of God’s Blessing God be gracious to us and bless us • and make his face to shine upon us, That your way may be known upon earth, • your saving power among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God; • let all the peoples praise you. O let the nations rejoice and be glad, • for you will judge the peoples righteously and govern the nations upon earth. Let the peoples praise you, O God; • let all the peoples praise you. Then shall the earth bring forth her increase, • and God, our own God, will bless us. God will bless us, • and all the ends of the earth shall fear him. Psalm 67 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. This opening prayer may be said The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence is kept. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen. Psalm 115 The Lord has been mindful of us and he will bless us. Not to us, Lord, not to us, but to your name give the glory, • for the sake of your loving mercy and truth. Why should the nations say, • ‘Where is now their God?’ As for our God, he is in heaven; • he does whatever he pleases. Their idols are silver and gold, • the work of human hands. R They have mouths, but cannot speak; • eyes have they, but cannot see; They have ears, but cannot hear; • noses have they, but cannot smell; They have hands, but cannot feel; feet have they, but cannot walk; • not a whisper do they make from their throats. Those who make them shall become like them • and so will all who put their trust in them. R But you, Israel, put your trust in the Lord; • he is their help and their shield. House of Aaron, trust in the Lord; • he is their help and their shield. You that fear the Lord, trust in the Lord; • he is their help and their shield. The Lord has been mindful of us and he will bless us; • may he bless the house of Israel; may he bless the house of Aaron; May he bless those who fear the Lord, • both small and great together. R May the Lord increase you more and more, • you and your children after you. May you be blest by the Lord, • the maker of heaven and earth. The heavens are the heavens of the Lord, • but the earth he has entrusted to his children. The dead do not praise the Lord, • nor those gone down into silence; But we will bless the Lord, • from this time forth for evermore. Alleluia. The Lord has been mindful of us and he will bless us. Living God, defend us from the idols which our hearts enthrone, that we may not go down into silence but be raised to our heaven of heavens in Jesus Christ our Lord. If there are two Scripture readings, the first may be read here, or both may be read after the canticle. 2 Samuel 15.13-end A messenger came to David, saying, ‘The hearts of the Israelites have gone after Absalom.’ Then David said to all his officials who were with him at Jerusalem, ‘Get up! Let us flee, or there will be no escape for us from Absalom. Hurry, or he will soon overtake us, and bring disaster down upon us, and attack the city with the edge of the sword.’ The king’s officials said to the king, ‘Your servants are ready to do whatever our lord the king decides.’ So the king left, followed by all his household, except ten concubines whom he left behind to look after the house. The king left, followed by all the people; and they stopped at the last house. All his officials passed by him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the six hundred Gittites who had followed him from Gath, passed on before the king. The whole country wept aloud as all the people passed by; the king crossed the Wadi Kidron, and all the people moved on towards the wilderness. Abiathar came up, and Zadok also, with all the Levites, carrying the ark of the covenant of God. They set down the ark of God, until the people had all passed out of the city. Then the king said to Zadok, ‘Carry the ark of God back into the city. If I find favour in the eyes of the Lord, he will bring me back and let me see both it and the place where it remains. But if he says, “I take no pleasure in you”, here I am, let him do to me what seems good to him.’ The king also said to the priest Zadok, ‘Look, go back to the city in peace, you and Abiathar, with your two sons, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan son of Abiathar. See, I will wait at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.’ So Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God back to Jerusalem, and they remained there. But David went up the ascent of the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went, with his head covered and walking barefoot; and all the people who were with him covered their heads and went up, weeping as they went. David was told that Ahithophel was among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, ‘O Lord, I pray you, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.’ When David came to the summit, where God was worshipped, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat torn and earth on his head. David said to him, ‘If you go on with me, you will be a burden to me. But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, “I will be your servant, O king; as I have been your father’s servant in time past, so now I will be your servant”, then you will defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel. The priests Zadok and Abiathar will be with you there. So whatever you hear from the king’s house, tell it to the priests Zadok and Abiathar. Their two sons are with them there, Zadok’s son Ahimaaz and Abiathar’s son Jonathan; and by them you shall report to me everything you hear.’ So Hushai, David’s friend, came into the city, just as Absalom was entering Jerusalem. Canticle A Song of the Covenant, or another suitable canticle, for example, number 44 (page 596), may be said Refrain: I have given you as a light to the nations, and I have called you in righteousness. There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years, for he was paralysed. Peter said to him, ‘Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; get up and make your bed!’ And immediately he got up. And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord. Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, ‘Please come to us without delay.’ So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, ‘Tabitha, get up.’ Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner. A suitable song or chant, or a responsory in this or another form, may follow Fear not, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. from Isaiah 43 Gospel Canticle The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah) is normally said, or Gloria in Excelsis (A Song of Gods Glory) (page 635) may be said Refrain You promised, O God, to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us. Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, • who has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, • born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets God promised of old • to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us, To show mercy to our ancestors, • and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: • to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, • holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, • for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation • by the forgiveness of all their sins. Refrain You promised, O God, to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us. Prayers Intercessions are offered ¶ for the day and its tasks ¶ for the world and its needs ¶ for the Church and her life The cycle on pages 364–365 and the prayer on page 377 may be used. The Collect of the day is said Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray and to give more than either we desire or deserve: pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer is said As our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. (or) Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Conclusion The Lord bless us, and preserve us from all evil, and keep us in eternal life. Amen. Let us bless the Lord.
