MORNING WALK 29th September 2014. A small road leads to Aaradi (Succorro) from the national highway at the foot of Porvorim hill. There is a tea stall at the junction followed by a large leafless tree silhouetted against the sunrise.Leafless trees can also be very beautiful. Beauty is not the monopoly of youth and spring! I was attracted by a heap of concrete half pipes stacked along the roadside by the PWD.A little further a cat sat on the fence of an old house with blue windows. The cat sat on the fence between the past and the present. Cats, I am told have nine lives.Perhaps , in some previous life the cat was cuddled by the little girl who stayed in that house. Across the house was an unique palm tree.It was growing fresh roots on the trunk just above the ground. I do not know if it is some kind of ailment of coconut trees. It set me thinking about new roots of all kinds. These days the nation is attempting to grow new roots to reach out to the past.It is a complex subject. The trunk of the palm tree however appeared like a sculpture. There is a road which moves pallaral to the national highway. It has old Indo Portuguese houses in a row , just a few meters apart, most of them uninhabited and crumbling. The houses stand witness to the past glory and present letigations amongst descendents! A Parsi family from Mumbai has bought one of the houses, I was told by Mr Dsouza who volunteered to be my guide. The family decided to earn the goodwill of the local population by constructing a Christian shrine and dedicating it to the memory of Mr Aspendiar Dshtori, Philantropist, poet and a friend of trees.
