MOSES IS DEAD Moses was a colossal figure. Throughout the centuries few saints of God have achieved as much intimacy with the Lord as he. Until this day, his name is synonymous with the Exodus. He is hailed as one of Israel’s greatest leaders and as a bulwark of holiness. I wonder what it must have felt like to be a Hebrew on the day he died. His death, incidentally, is where the book of Joshua commences. God’s first words in Joshua are, “Moses, my servant is dead” (Joshua 1:2). But the good news is that the story doesn’t end there. God revealed to Moses’s successor Joshua that He still had a purpose for the people of Israel. 1.- Moses is dead but the work of the Lord continues “Now therefore arise” (Joshua 1:2). Moses may be dead, but the work of the Lord continues. God didn’t tell Joshua to stand still but to get up and get going. Yes, praise God for Moses! Blessed be the Lord for forty years of anointed ministry! But God’s plan is much, much, much bigger than Moses. When Moses is out of the picture, God will still be at work. The Lord was here before we were born and He’ll be here long after we’re gone. The work of the Almighty never ceases its onward march. 2.- Moses is dead but there is a new mission on the horizon “Go over this Jordan” (Joshua 1:2). Moses’ death marked a new beginning for God’s people. The Hour of Conquest birthed. Moses fulfilled his ministry as a wondrous man of God, but the Lord had new missions, new plans and new projects for the Israelites. When the man of God dies this does not mean that the mission of the Lord perishes along with it. Joshua had to realize that bright days lay ahead. God was with him just as He had been with Moses. Even though Moses had headed onto glory, hope and faith abounded in the hearts of the Hebrews. 3.- Moses is dead but there will be blessing “Unto the Land which I do give them” (Joshua 1:2). The Promised Land was just around the corner with all of its milk and honey. The people no doubt enjoyed much blessing from God’s hand under the wise leadership of Brother Moses, but more even more blessing was to follow. In spite of all appearances to the contrary, God hadn’t given up on His desire to bless and prosper His chosen ones. His favour still abounded upon them. Moses was dead. Amen. But the blessing of the Lord was still alive and kicking. Amen and amen. Conclusion The example of Moses must teach us to lift our eyes higher than Moses unto the Lord God Almighty. Until we too like Moses fulfil the time that is given to us, we must be ever abounding in the unceasing work of the Lord, embracing His new horizons and laying a hold of the blessings that He has promised to lavishly outpour upon us.
