MOSTLY SETTLED DAY AHEAD (HOWEVER, COLDER AIR IS MOVING IN) : Situation: Colder conditions move in this evening with a weak southerly change which may provide a shower or two. Into Wednesday this bitterly cold SW flow kicks into gear pulling up polar air, showers, hail and snow flurries to low levels. Due to the wind change, this will be more of a coastal event with gales and wild weather hitting the Peninsula. This cold system of weather will hang around until Friday before easing. Winter temperatures are finally here! Christchurch: Mostly fine day in the garden city. Light northerly winds and a nice high of 14 degrees. After dark (7pm onwards) there is a chance of the odd isolated shower with a weak southerly change) Kaikoura: Beaut day in Kaikoura with mostly sunny skies and pleasant day time temperatures. High of 15 degrees. North Canterbury: Sunny with harmless high cloud. Light northerly winds .High of 14. Mid Canterbury: Sunny with harmless high cloud for most part. Towards evening there is a chance of a shower or two with a cool weak southerly change. Light NW winds turning southerly. Banks Peninsula: Mostly fine on the Peninsula with light winds. After dark there is a chance of the odd shower with a southerly change. High of 14 degrees. South Canterbury: Mostly fine with light winds. From mid-afternoon expect a cool southerly change that may produce a few showers. Mountain forecast: Showers near the main divide falling as snow above 1300m. By mid-afternoon expect a cool southerly to move in bringing some showers and snow showers above 700m. Freezing levels will slowly drop to around 1000m and winds will turn more SW into the afternoon. Outlook: This cold SW flow will bring showers and hail and perhaps even sleet for a period of time overnight Wednesday. Expect chilly day time temperatures for the reminder of the weak with showers more likely about coastal Canterbury. Banks Peninsula could well see 15cm above 700m by midday Thursday. While it’s going to get cold, this could well be hit and miss, with less moisture showing on each updated ‘model run’. Not the news snow bunnies were hoping for! If conditions change you will be the first to hear at CWU. Ill be back over the weekend.Going under the knife to get the knee back to full strength.. stay warm over the next few days! -Russ
