LIU YONG SEAN A graduate of ASWARA in 2007, Kuala Lumpur, Yong Sean went on to obtain his BA (2011) and MA in Dance Performance at the Korea University of Art. He is currently based in Seoul, performing and choreographing for various Korean dance companies such as the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company, Soup Dance Company, Ma Mook Dance Company, to name but a few. In 2009, he won the Bravo Asia in Korea Grand Prize and bagged the Gold prize at the Seoul International Dance Competition in 2011 & 2013. He is a founding member of MOA (Music of Asia), a regionalmusic group. SOONUFAT SUPRAMANIAM (SOON) Soon worked in Australia for 5 years from 2009 – 2013 as a director, performer, choreographer and teacher in over 10 productions with different theatre companies. His involvement has taken him to a variety of festivals in Australia that has included the Perth Fringe Festival, Anywhere Theatre Festival and the Canberra Multicultural Festival. In 2013, he produced Australia based Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre’s main stage theatre production, MEDEA: The River Runs Backwards and Anywhere Theatre Festival’s sold out season of Ma Ma Ma Mad. Soonufat has trained in butoh with Takuya Murumatsu of Dairakudakan, the largest butoh company in the world, and Yoshito Ohno –son of famed butoh exponent Kazuo Ohno. He returned to Penang in December 2013 and founded Darkhorse Physical Theatre. IZZARD PADZIL Izzard is a Penang-based theatre practitioner who hails from Selangor. He works closelywith Arts Ed, Penang as a facilitator in many of their children’s workshop performances, and performs extensively with Ombak Ombak ARTStudio, working closely with renowned dancer/choreographer Aida Redza. Notably, Izzard performed in the multi-disciplinary performance River Meets Light at the George Town Festival 2010, and Bridges and Kaki Lima at the George Town Festival 2012. In 2013, he performed in USM’s Bukan Bunuh Diri at the APB Theater School Festival in Ho Chi Minh City, and is currently preparing a piece for the same festival to be held in Shanghai later this year. MODERATOR, MUMTAZ BEGUM ABOO BACKER Mumtaz Begum Aboo Backer is a senior lecturer with the School of Arts, USM, Penang. Trained in various dance and acting techniques, she has collaborated with leading choreographers, directors, composers, dancers, movers and non movers in the country to produce artistic works. Her recently published book titled Dancing the Strong Woman in Malaysia is the first to discuss women’s issues and feminism through dance in Malaysia. Some of her recent artistic works include working with the less fortunate and children with special needs. She is a strong advocate of Arts for All and encourages young people charting their artistic journeys.
