MPS EXPRESS FEARS ABOUT NEW LAND POLICY Members of Parliament - TopicsExpress

MPS EXPRESS FEARS ABOUT NEW LAND POLICY Members of Parliament have expressed fears that the new Land Policy which seeks to reserve a certain quota of land for locals in villages around Gaborone has the potential to fuel tribalism. Tswapong North MP, Prince Maele, stated that although there is a need for equitable distribution of land, he rejects the policy because it even tampers with human rights. Francistown South MP, Wynter Mmolotsi stated that it was surprising that the ruling BDP is coming up with a policy that has the potential to divide the nation. He said that it was surprising that BDP MP’s are against the introduction of other languages on state media claiming that it will fuel tribalism, but are bringing in a policy that will certainly fuel tribalism. Mmolotsi said statements by the Minister of Lands and Housing that the policy is meant to promote cultural identity are misplaced. Maele also told Parliament that he refutes allegations by Selibe-Phikwe East MP, Gilson Saleshando, that he is defying President Ian Khama who promised residents of Bokaa village last year that a certain quota will be reserved for locals in villages around Gaborone. Maele said that President Ian Khama is not immune to being advised.
