MPS names Michael Goar as new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) - An experienced administrator, nonprofit executive now leader in school system he once attended. MINNEAPOLIS – Dr. Bernadeia Johnson, superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS), announced today that Michael Goar will be the new MPS chief executive officer (CEO) effective July 8. Goar is the executive director of Generation Next , a broad-based Twin Cities nonprofit partnership dedicated to educational excellence and narrowing the achievement gap. As the No. 2 executive at MPS, Goar replaces Rick Mills, who recently took a superintendent’s job in Manatee County, Fla. The CEO serves as acting superintendent in the absence of the superintendent and oversees strategic planning, human resources and operations for the school district. Goar grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Washburn High School. An experienced administrator, Goar served MPS as executive director of human resources and labor relations before going on to key leadership posts in the Memphis and Boston public schools. He was chief operating officer of Memphis City Schools and deputy superintendent/chief operating officer of Boston Public Schools. “I am thrilled to bring aboard someone of Michael Goar’s stature to help us reach our ambitious goals,” Johnson said. “As an administrator, Michael brings intimate knowledge of our school district as well as the best practices of other major school systems. In addition, his nonprofit work has given him insight into the many other community organizations whose support is so critical to the success of our students and their families.” Johnson recently announced efforts to Shift the school district through an intensified focus on the priorities that will reshape the educational experience for all students and prepare them to meet the challenges of today and the rapidly changing future. One new priority includes the development of partnership schools for achievement, autonomy and accountability. “I’m proud to have been selected to help the Minneapolis Board of Education and Dr. Johnson transform the Minneapolis Public Schools into a model of effective education in the 21st century,” Goar said. “We’re committed to discovering the best practices, both within our system and elsewhere, and putting them in place. With productive partnerships internally and externally, and a healthy dose of innovation, we will improve the learning outcomes of Minneapolis students.” Goar’s new role is in many ways a continuation of his work at Generation Next and should bode well for a healthy partnership between the broad-based community network and the Minneapolis schools, said Kim Nelson, president of the General Mills Foundation and co-chair of the Generation Next Leadership Council. “We wish Michael well in his new role and thank him for building a strong foundation for Generation Next,” Nelson said. “Many of the educational achievement issues Michael worked on with us are immediately relevant to his work with MPS. We look forward to a close partnership as we all gather community input and support for new approaches to narrowing the achievement gap in the Twin Cities.” Generation Next will immediately begin a national search for a new executive director. Frank Forsberg, senior vice president, Systems Change and Innovation for Greater Twin Cities United Way, will serve as Interim Executive Director for Generation Next.
