MRU Elite wins soccer tournament in S. Oregon The Mad River United Soccer League took first place this weekend at the Rogue Memorial Challenge in Medford, Oregon. In a division with 10 teams from throughout Oregon, California and Nevada, the MRU Elite (a group of U-12 boys from throughout Humboldt County) came together for an excellent weekend of soccer. There first two matches proved to be the easiest, with scores of 7-0 and 5-1 respectively. Day two brought much tougher competition. With Redding scoring first, the MRU Elite pulled together and turned things around with a final 3-1 victory over their longtime rivals. This was followed by a physical game against a team from Reno, Nevada where the boys kept their heads about them and managed to walk away with a 4-0 victory. Coming out on top of their bracket, the MRU Elite faced the winner of the other bracket, a team from Livermore, California in the finals. Easily the toughest match of the weekend, the MRU Elite had a difficult time getting points on the board. Entering halftime the MRU Elite were down 0-1. The second half started just the same as the first, with the MRU Elite maintaining possession, but struggling to get any shots off. This all changed in the last fifteen minutes of the game when a beautifully executed system of overlapping passing triangles led to a the MRU Elite’s Andy Miranda scoring the team’s first goal. Just two minutes later, midfielder Caleb Coke struck a hard shot from just outside the top of the box that was deflected by the Livermore keeper. Positioning himself perfectly, MRU Elite’s Garrett Hall was there to knock to in. As the momentum shifted and the clock was running out, Jesse Herrera received a beautiful cross to the back post that he chested into the net. Livermore pushed hard at the end, but the strong defense of players like Luis Melecio, Connor Olson, Gabe Sanchez and Aidan Atkins-Salazar held them to only one point. All in all, the MRU Elite scored a total of 22 goals for the weekend, allowing only 3 to be scored against them.
